When you are building your business, you will want to be sure that you have an online presence, so that potential business partners and customers can see the full range of products and services which your business offers.

Part of building your business is selecting your online domain address, there are two choice when selecting your business domain

branding

keyword specific domain

Selecting a keyword specific domain means that you will rank faster on the front page of google (compared with a domain which is for branding) when all the on page optimisation elements are correct. In some cases it is possible to be on the front page within several days of your website going live.

Domain selection is covered in greater detail in our domain name selection article

Building your website

Once your domain name has been selected, you will want to start thinging about your website and who you will be marketing to. Will you be focusing on your local customer or are you looking to attract a wider audience, going australia wide or even globally, all of these require different strategies in order to maximise you initial impact and to start pulling in customers as soon as your website has gone live.

Local Marketing

When you target your local market, you want SEO experts who understand the local market and the customers behaviour for local internet marketing, you want the local experts who only use white hat techniques to ensure your prominence on the from page of Google to ensure your return on investment and Profits are maximised.

Search Engine Optimisation Melbourne

When you want to a wider audience, you require an SEO expert, who understands how to get you to the front page of google and to keep you there so that you can concentrate on your business. You SEO expert will understand the behavioural patterns of customers and what type of actions they take when they lan on your business website. A web site designer or even a graphic designer, do not understand how your customers behave and what they are searching for. The best the web site designer can achieve is to get you ranking for your business name and nothing more.

In all reality if someone know your business name then they already know that your business exists, you need to find customers who are unaware of the products or services.

SEO seminars are a great place to start optimising your web site; taking a web page which may have no clear direction or call to actions, to a web site which Google finds interesting and relevant.

Google will start to index your web pages and your customers will find your business on the Google Search Engine Results Page. Page 1 of Google the most valued internet real estate.

This is called the on page optimisation of the web page.
The next step is the off page optimisation, getting back links to your website, driving more traffic through social networking techniques, and building a list of potential customers.

Off page optimisation is a time consuming process which MUST be done manually and slowly. Should Google find unusual activity in your linking pattern then you may get blacklisted

Attending a 1 – 3 hour SEO seminar with on page optimisation as the main topic, can be deceptive and alluring to small business. Many Small Businesses believe that they will be able to get up and running quickly and be ranking number one on Google within a matter of days.

However as only a small amount of information is presented, then it is very easy to fall into the trap of using outdated information from family and friends who know a little about web sites done several years ago. Some of this information could even get your business website downgraded in the Google rankings.

The truth is that SEO is a long process and many people give up when they realise that the short SEO training seminar which they attended, only revealed a small part of Search engine optimisation tactics and techniques.

Contact Aus eCom Connections today for your very own in house Training Seminar so that your website will start to rank to rank in google (We tell you what truly should get you ranked and what you need to avoid)

If you are not on Page 1 of Google, your potential customers are not going to find you.

Very seldom do internet users move onto page 2 of Google or beyond. Rather when your customer does not find relevant results they try to refine the search down by locality. This has the impact that the results are now going to be more targeted than before and the searcher is going to find a result which is relevant.

Contracting out your SEO work is a positive step to helping your business survive in these tough economic times, this will ensure that your web site is optimised the best it can be for both the on page and off page optimisation techniques.

When you have your SEO work contracted out, you know there is a dedicated project manager looking after your site and that you will receive month reports covering your website page rank, visitor analysis, page view trends, and current google position.

WE will benchmark where you are initially for all items which we will be reporting on, however our focus is not simply to increase traffic but in working towards increasing the customer conversion rates.

Sub domains and franchises

Nearly all franchises utilise sub domains for the web pages of the franchise. Should this technique be used then the franchisee needs to ensure the information on the sub-domain is different to the main web site. If the sub-domain is not different to the main site then Google will identify the sub domain as duplicate content and the sub-domain will not be indexed and as such your business will suffer. The same applies to normal website who utilise sub-domains to catch keywords, ensure that content is different and reflective of the sub-domain.

Keyword Rich Domain names

The problem with a keyword rich domain name which uses hypenation is explaining what your domain name is when talking face to face. When people search for your market segment then becuase you have a keyword rich domain name, changes are that you will appear in the google search engine results, as such there is no problem.

In order to overcome this problem register your normal business domain, (which is on your business cards) and then register your keyword rich domain(with or without any hypenation). Once the keyword rich domain name is registered then upload your website pages to the keyword rich domain name. NOTE if your business has been existing for some time, do not use this method as it will make you lose google ranking. this is only for NEW websites…. Next on your business domain name, then ask your webmaster to implement a 301 permanent redirect to the keyword rich domain name.

now you have the best of both worlds, and easy to explain web site name and a keyword rich domain name which the search engines like….

Hope this series has helped and you go forth and increase your google ranking

There is a method hypenation can be used and i will discuss this in an up coming post….A Keyword rich domain name can also help in getting multiple pages (the famous indent) in the google search engine results page thereby helping push down the competition.
This techniques is a technique which should be considered….

Which Domain extension

Many web designers will recommend to a business to register a “.com” and a “.com.au”, however as Google uses geo location then if your server is bases in Australia then google will identify you as a person in Australia and looking for Australian results. When your website is on an Australian server then it does not matter if you use either “.com” or “.com.au”. It is misleading and false to tell businesses that you must register both domains.

Intellectual property

In rare cases you may want to register multiple variants of the domain name to prevent other businesses from piggy backing your success and good will, however initially registering multiple variants would not make sense as there is no track record or success and should your business thrive then you can the register the other domain variants.

Branding

Selecting your Domain is just as Important as selecting your Business name, and undoubtedly you will experience the same problems as selecting a business name.

The domain name has been taken and registered by someone else or parked(bought and not being used). Should the selected domain name be parked then it will be possible to purchase the domain from the owner, depending on how valuable the domain is to both yourself and the owner then the price may be considerable and the best option would be to select a variant of the name.

To determine the owner use www.mywebname.com.au/whois.php

Selecting alternative Domain name

All is not lost and you can in most instances add a prefix to the domain name eg rather than register www.bluewidgets.com.au, you can select www.mybluewidgets.com.au, rather than selecting housecleaning.com.au select greenhousecleaning.com.au

Domain Name Hyphenation

Do not be tempted to use hyphenation to separate out the words, as this firstly makes it difficult to explain to a potential customer your web address, next it is difficult to type in and lastly Google is able to separate out words even when they are concatenated together making it possible to identify keywords. Do not use underscore and never use spaces in web page names.
